Songs that were big for me last summer
1. New Order – I Told You So LOCKED
It's been ten long years since I've been home
I've been waiting here with nowhere to go
It's an occupation I don't like
But it pays the rent and turns on the light
I got Waiting For The Siren’s Call in June and this song dominated my summer. I listened to it constantly. And it was completely at random. I had a lot of the famous singles off of the CD already and after a first listening I was not impressed by the other stuff, but then I was out running one morning trying to chase off my cramps and this came up on shuffle and totally changed my life.
2. Beautiful – Goldfrapp
I shiver, you shake it
To me I can't help it
Don't know, am I dreaming?
Or have you? You haven't
This song is just so bouncy and fun. I want to leap off buildings and hop over fences when I listen to this. It just makes me inordinately happy.
3. Sin Sin Sin – Robbie Williams
Don't let your eyes tell the brain
You should feel ashamed
Everyone needs it baby
And I feel the same
I was visiting Europe when I heard this song. It was really big there and the music video cracked me up, so I downloaded it. Next thing I knew I was listening to it constantly. Plus, I kind of like the sentiment.
4. Bohemian Like You – The Dandy Warhols
Who's that guy just hangin' at your pad
He's lookin' kinda bummed
You broke up that's too bad
I guess it's fair if he always pays the rent
And he doesn't get bent about
Sleeping on the couch when I'm there
Colleen played this song once when we were on our road trip, and I’m a big fan of The Rolling Stones, so I was very amused that they used the riff from “Brown Sugar” and it’s SO catchy.
5. I Don’t Feel Like Dancing – The Scissor Sisters LOCKED
So how come I feel so lonely when you're up getting down?
So I play along when I hear that favourite song
I'm gonna be the one who gets it right.
You better know when you're swingin' round the room
Look's like magic's soley yours tonight
Some of you will remember how this was released as a single last summer, I was ALL over this song. I love pretty much anything that comes out of the Scissor Sisters heads, but this was so much fun. It came on last night, and I was like whoa, I had a really good time before I met my evil room mates who wouldn’t let me play this. Goodness. That should’ve foreshadowed the downfall of our relationship.
6. Love Is Only A Feeling – The Darkness
The state of elation that this unison of hearts achieved
I had seen, I had touched, I had tasted and I truly believed
That the light of my life
Would tear a hole right through each cloud that scudded by
Just to beam on you and I
Somebody told me that I should pay attention to the other stuff that The Darkness did, because “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” was all I’d heard. Well this was the first thing I downloaded and it's very flowery, I see, now that I've actually looked up the lyrics. And it's sweet. So there.
7. F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E – Pulp LOCKED
What is this feeling called love.
Why me, why you, why here, why now.
It doesn't make no sense no.
It's not convenient no.
It doesn't fit my plans no.
It's something I don't understand oh.
F.E.E.L.I.N.G. C.A. double L.E.D. L.O.V.E.
Oh what is this thing that is happening to me.
Pulp is one of my favorite bands, and I’d actually never listened to this song straight through. And then I did. It changed my life. It might also have been because it was 4 AM and I was already a little crazy, but Jarvis shouting at full blast on your stereo is an experience everybody needs. Although he's kind of an asshole for making me type out all those damn periods.
8. Sewn – The Feeling
Danny boy, don't be afraid,
to shake that ass, and misbehave
Danny boy, I know you got time,
but what are you waiting for?
Anyway the dust may just blow away,
if you wait for a windy day
This was another song that was really big when I was in the Netherlands. I listened to it pretty non-stop through July.
9. Parade – Garbage
Believing in nothing
Makes life so boring
So let's pray for something
To feel good in the morning
Granted, this was like the only CD that Colleen and I had on our road trip, so we spent a lot of time listening to it for that reason. However, it is good. I’m sure I’ve put it on fanmixes before.
10. Seed 2.0 – The Roots
She want neo-soul, cause hip-hop is old
She don't want no rock-n-roll
She want platinum, ice and gold
She want a whole lotta somethin' to fold
If you a obstacle she just drop ya cold
Do you ever have a song that you haven’t heard in a really long time, and then you listen to it again, and suddenly your playing it all the time? Well I downloaded this after another one of my forays to The Netherlands when I was a Freshman in high school, but it showed up on TMF when I was watching TV and then I was like WHOA. I remember that song. I'm not a terribly big fan of rap music, but but but the chorus line. You just listen.
11. Wiseman – James Blunt
She said to me, "Go steady on me.
Won't you tell me what the Wise Men said?
When they came down from Heaven,
Smoked nine 'til seven,
All the shit that they could find
DON’T SAY A WORD. It was in the preview for Trust The Man. I fell in love with it. Leave me alone.
12. Rufus Wainwright – 11:11 LOCKED
Oh the hours we are separate
11:11 is just precious time we've wasted
So patch up your bleeding hearts
And put away your posies
I'm gonna have a drink
Before we ring around the rosies with you
Dude this is like the sweetest sappiest wonderful song ever, and the truth? It’s not very sappy at all. SO IT DOUBLY WINS.
hope y'all like, stay tuned for the songs I listened to incessently during my first semester of college. That's coming soon. Also, some of these you may need my iTunes password. If you want to download one of these songs, please IM me for the password.
